Dozens of firefighters from several communities spent hours last night and early this morning fighting a wind-swept fire in Wainfleet.Firefighters were first called to a house fire on Beach Rd East near Morgan’s Point just after 7:30 last night. High winds resulted in the flames spreading to a home next door; a third cottage suffered smoke and water damage. About 14 fire trucks and 50 firefighters from Wainfleet, Port Colborne, Pelham and Haldimand worked for hours to keep the flames from spreading further. Extreme cold from the wind was another challenge for fire crews who needed a salt truck to treat the road surface around the fire trucks.Wainfleet fire chief Harry Flagg believes it was an electrical fire. “We interviewed homeowners. There were electrical issues throughout the day yesterday.”Damage may be as high as $600,000.
