Juventus make light work of Monaco to reach Champions League final

first_imgJuventus eased into the Champions League final with a 2-1 victory over Monaco at the Juventus Stadium to claim a 4-1 aggregate victory against the Ligue 1 leaders.Heading into the game with the huge advantage of two away goals, Juve never looked troubled, and had their place in the Cardiff final guaranteed by half-time after Mario Mandzukic and Dani Alves had scored.Kylian Mbappe pulled one back for ASM in the second half to continue his fine season, though there was never any fear Juve would be pegged back by the plucky French outfit.Monaco started on the front foot, Falcao forcing a save from Buffon in the opening seconds, before Mbappe hit the post with a low strike – though he was called for being in an offside position. After a shaky start, Juve grew into the game; Mandzukic twice got on the end of balls in the Monaco area, but failed to create anything.Dybala wasted possession on the edge of the Monaco box which led to Silva breaking towards Buffon’s goal, but his pass through to Falcao failed to find the Colombia striker. It was a simple ball which would have put Falcao through on goal, and Silva was evidently frustrated. And he was lucky Higuain wasted a fine chance to hand Juve the lead just moments later. The forward claimed possession in the Monaco box after they had failed to clear the ball, but, faced one-on-one with Subasic, decided to chip the keeper. A wise idea, as Subasic was wrong-footed, but Glik managed to get back and smash the ball clear before it passed the goal line.Subasic was called into duty frequently over the next few passages of play.He saved excellently from Mandzukic, but could do nothing to prevent the Croatian opening the scoring in the 32nd minute.A wonderful cross from Alves curled onto Mandzukic’s head, and through Subasic did well to save his original header, the rebound was thrashed home by the 30-year-old.Higuain then had the ball in the net but was correctly whistled for offside, Subasic saved well from the Argentine, but it was from the keeper’s poor clearance which led to Juve’s second goal of the night. His poor punch from a corner fell to Alves just outside the area, and the Brazil full-back struck a wonderful first-time volley past the keeper to all-but secure Juventus’ place in the final. After the break, Juve were strolling around the park as they eased their way to victory.Cuadrado should have scored moments after being introduced from the bench, but he delayed his shot and was eventually dispossessed by Raggi.Monaco looked out of sorts, aware they were already defeated with a half of football left to play. But, one neat move got them a goal back. Mbappe was played into the left side of the area and forced a corner from Buffon. From the resultant set piece, Moutinho worked the ball along the face of goal, and Mbappe got there first to tap the ball past Buffon.Monaco continued to press as they chased a second goal, even though the game was beyond them.Moutinho, Fabinho and Mbappe all had shots which came to nothing, and as time passed Juve slowed down play to kill the game. They are masters of the art, and the final few minutes passed without incident as Allegri’s men booked their place in the Cardiff showpiece. 1 Juventus will play either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final last_img
