first_imgWill Hughes has backed former Derby manager Steve McClaren to bring sexy football back to Newcastle.The former England manager has been handed the reins at St James’ Park, following John Carver’s removal.McClaren oversaw a dramatic collapse at Pride Park last season as the Rams, top of the Championship in February, failed to secure a play-off place.But Hughes, who worked with the former Manchester United assistant manager at the East Midlands side, insists the 56-year-old will be a positive influence on the Magpies.“Steve McClaren will do well at Newcastle,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show. “He’s helped me a lot. He’s also helped the team last season and we became one of the best attractive footballing teams in the last couple of years.”And Hughes added new Derby boss Paul Clement will help the side mount a serious title challenge next season.“You look at Paul’s CV and he’s done everything in the game,” he continued. “Hopefully he can translate that to Derby and there will be some successful times ahead.”“We one hundred percent have the players to challenge again. The boys are eager to go again and we definitely have the players to put together a promotion challenge this season.”last_img
