Harvard wins big at ECO Awards

first_imgHarvard University continues to blaze a trail when it comes to environmental sustainability. The CommuterChoice Program and Harvard Medical School (HMS) were recently recognized among recipients of the first annual Excellence in Commuter Options (ECO) awards. Sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, through MassRides and MassCommute, the ECO awards recognize Massachusetts employers who help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging employees to travel by mass transit, walking, biking, or carpooling.CommuterChoice was presented with the Pinnacle Award. For more than a decade the program has helped the Harvard community reduce its impact on the environment and has helped reduce the single-occupancy vehicle rate for Harvard commuters to 13 percent. The national average is well over 70 percent!HMS was honored with the Leadership Award for its efforts to provide a myriad of sustainable commuting options. From discounted MBTA CharlieCards to carpooling, the HMS community has a wide variety of commuting options that significantly reduce Harvard’s greenhouse gas emissions.last_img
