LETTERKENNY YOUTHREACH GETS SET FOR EXCITING SUMMER PROGRAMME

first_imgEDUCATION: The corridors in Letterkenny Youthreach are currently still and quiet, as staff and learners are busy completing assessments and putting the final touches to portfolios. With just four weeks left until the summer assessment deadline this is one of the busiest times of the Centre’s calendar. The Youthreach Programme, which offers certified training and education for early school leavers, caters for forty young people aged 15 – 20years. The programme operates from September to July and the young people who attend can receive training, meal and travel allowances where appropriate. One young person describes the programme “Youthreach is a bit like school. We attend classes and work towards our FETAC but it’s different to school too, it’s more relaxed and we get paid to come here and the teachers are very supportive”.But there is one time of the year that all of the learners and staff look forward to most and that’s the busy summer programme. The Centre’s Coordinator, Gillian Kennedy, explains what happens during this time of the year “once we have our major assessments over us in May, the staff and learners here shift gears and we get ready for a whole new programme. Kennedy said, “The summer programme is an opportunity to reward everyone for all their hard work during the year, and we plan four packed weeks of summer fun.“This year we will be holding barbeques, community games, planning hikes, excursions, a two night residential, a deep sea fishing trip, a hair and beauty session, fashion styling sessions, cinema trips, cycling trips as well as a road safety workshop and customer service training.“Everyone in the Centre makes suggestions as to what they’d like to do and we agree a programme that has something for everyone.“It’s a very special time of the year. And sure where else would you get it, being paid to have such fun?!”“Another young learner recalls what they loved best about last year’s summer programme “the summer programme here is fantastic. “Last year we did so many things but by far my favourite was the three day residential away in Connemara, all the water sports activities and the zips lines and that were brilliant”.The Centre has been operating on the Kilmacrennan Road since 1990 and this October will spark the beginning of a year of exciting activities to mark their milestone anniversary.Kennedy added, “This year to mark our twenty-fifth anniversary we are planning a series of celebratory events including an art exhibition, a special gathering of alumni, creating a DVD, and even the possibility of a foreign trip, it’s an exciting time in the life of the programme and we want to celebrate all that we have achieved over the years.“We will be asking people who have completed the programme to get in touch, return for a big celebration and to feature in our special DVD to help mark our achievements”. “You can check out the centre’s Facebook page to keep up to date with centre activities. If you are interested in joining Letterkenny Youthreach please contact the centre for an application form. Shopping centre crash pilot did not reveal nature of emergency

first_imgThe pilot of a charter aircraft involved in a fiery crash in a Melbourne shopping centre on Tuesday did not give details of the emergency as he called out “mayday’’ several times while the plane veered to the left.Initial reports indicated the aircraft suffered a catastrophic engine failure but air safety investigators are keeping an open mind about the reasons for the crash. This is because aviation accidents are often the result of a combination of factors rather than a single cause.Facing reporters in Melbourne on Wednesday, Australian Transport Safety Bureau chief Greg Hood said investigators would look extensively at all possible causal factors behind the accident. “That includes maintenance records, the history of the aeroplane, the history of the pilot, the weight and balance,’’ he said. “*It involves previous accidents in relation to the Super King Air, for example, so at this very early stage certainly we’re not going to speculate in relation to any specific part of the investigation.’’Five people died and freeways were closed after the plane exploded when it hit the closed DFO shopping centre next to Essendon Airport. Killed were veteran charter pilot Max Quartermain as well as US tourists and golfers Greg DeHaven, Glenn Garland, Russell Munsch and John Washburn, all from Texas.Whitehouse press secretary Sean Spicer acknowledged the crash during a Press briefing on Tuesday.”The president’s thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and the US embassy and consulate are ready to provide necessary and appropriate assistance,’’ Spicer said. The ATSB on Wednesday had four investigators on the ground in Melbourne and Hood said the aim was to issue a preliminary factual report on the crash within 28 days. The investigators — whose backgrounds include aeronautical investigations, flight operations and mechanical engineering — are likely to remain on site for the next few days gathering evidence which will then undergo a forensic examination and analysis likely to take months to complete. They already have more than 100 people on their witness list and will be collecting evidence such as footage from dash-cams from cars on the highway that could show features of the aircraft such as whether the undercarriage was deployed.Hood said the Super King Air had taxied out to a southern runway out for a take-off at 8.30am and started a take-off roll at  8.59am.Not long after Quartermain issued a mayday as the aircraft veered left and hit the shopping centre.“My understanding is he didn’t refer to the specific nature of the emergency and he declared the mayday and said that word a number of times,’’ Hood said. “ Obviously, that can relate to a number of things that can go wrong in that aeroplane.’’Questions have been raised about why Quartermain did not continue to climb if only one engine failed and Hood agreed modern twin-engine aircraft were designed to do this. The plane also began veering to the left shortly after take-off and when asked if this would cause a loss in altitude that would have contributed to the crash,  Hood said he was not sure he would characterise it that way.“I’m not sure it was a sharp turn, in my observation it was a veer to the left rather than a sharp turn,’’ he said. The ATSB chief also acknowledged media speculation about the pilot and his involvement in a reported breakdown of separation at Mt Hotham in September, 2015.The ATSB investigated the incident but has yet to issue a report and Hood said he was not specifically aware of the pilot’s history or the timeline for the Mt Hotham report’s release. The Australian newspaper said at the time that a Sydney pilot had lodged an incident report that his plane and the King Air flown by Quartermain had come within 300ft vertically and one nautical mile of each other.  The report said that Quartermain was struggling with a faulty GPS in poor weather and did not appear to know where he was, saying he was in locations 20 nautical miles apart within a short period. CASA put Quartermain through an instrument proficiency check after the incident which he passed on the second attempt. CASA sent one of its own staff to conduct the check rather than rely on a third party. It also understood the aircraft recently underwent maintenance to correct a hydraulic problem. However, Hood cautioned against making early assumptions about the crash. “With any accident, particularly aviation accidents, we find that initially there are a number of factors which leap out at you,’’ he said. “The investigators are trained not to put any bias or any reliance on what is the obvious.  It’s really important that when you’re investigating an aviation transport accident, for example, that you remain completely objective.“So whilst in the initial walk through yesterday and the initial examination of records we’ve discovered some interesting facets, we really need to gather all the evidence and conduct the analysis before we would be able to say what might have caused the accident.’’last_img read more

More South Africans getting educated

first_img30 October 2012 South Africans are becoming increasingly better educated, according to the country’s latest census, with the proportion of children at school showing a marked increase, as well as the percentage of people who have completed their secondary schooling. Statistics South Africa released the results of census 2011, the country’s third population count since democratic elections were first held in 1994, in Pretoria on Tuesday. The previous censuses took place in 2001 and 1996. There has been a general increase in the percentage of South Africans from the ages of five up to 15 attending school, the census 2011 results show. Enrolment for the five-year-old age group increased from 22.5% in 1996 to 45.6% in 2001 to 81.2% in 2011. For the six-year-old age group, these figures were at 49.1% in 1996, 70.3% in 2001 and 92.7% in 2011, while for the seven-year-old group they were at 73.1% in 1996, 88.4% in 2001 and 96.1% in 2011. “The vast majority of students in South Africa attend public educational institutions. Only 5% of those aged 5 to 24 years, who were attending educational institutions in 2001, attended private institutions as opposed to the 7.3% in 2011,” the census report states.Increase in private school attendance There was a general increase in private school attendance across all the provinces, with the highest in Gauteng at 16.7%, followed by the Western Cape at 7.5% and the Free State at 6.4%. All other provinces had private institution attendance rates of less than 5%. An increase in black Africans aged between 5 and 24 years attending educational institutions was also recorded. Figures for this population group increased steadily from 70.7% in 1996 to 72.1% in 2001, to 73.9% in 2011. Attendance rates among coloured, Indian/Asian and white population groups also increased. The results also showed that the proportion of individuals aged 20 who have no schooling, halved from 19.1% in 1996 to 8.6% in 2011. “There is a significant decrease in persons with no schooling over the 10 years,” the report states. In addition, the percentage of South Africans aged 20 years and older that have received no formal education has decreased steadily between 1996 and 2011. In 1996, 17% of males in this age group had no formal education. This decreased to 15.5% in 2001 and further to 7.2% in 2011. Among females, the percentage with no formal education declined from 20.9% in 1996, to 20% in 2001 and 9.9% in 2011. A notable improvement was also recorded in the number of people who had completed their education. “The proportion of persons who completed secondary education (matric) or higher increased from 23.4% in 1996 to 40.5% in 2011,” the report states. Forever Young 3X-Long Light Ash Blonde Number 22TH613 Ladies Fashion Wig – A bit disappointing

first_img Love the color, brilliant length, nice and thick it looks like hair. Well made also a good fit,it will not come off if worn out when windy. Would buy from forever young again nicely priced. Will last for years if taken good care of ( maintain regarly ). Was truly seeking ahead to wearing this wig but the hair saved slipping out and it grew to become really tangled quite simply.Reviews from purchasers :A fantastic wig.WHEN WORN WILL TURN HEADSA bit disappointing The wig is quite lovely and thick, ideal for halloween or special get together. It has a crafted in size adjustor. It is really relaxed and not as well sizzling.Okay for a fancy costume but tough to design and style other than how it currently appears. Here are the specifications for the Forever Young 3X-Long Light Ash Blonde Number 22TH613 Ladies Fashion Wig:Stunning extra long 29 inch wig with a full fringeA beautiful contemporary hairMade of premier Kanekalon synthetic hair so smooth, silky and softIt feels and move like real human hairSuits most face shapes Awesome wig for the price range. It is not a significant high quality wig and the artificial hair is not the tangle cost-free kind, (fairly the reverse) the wig will never endure lengthy as it looses plenty of hair each time it requires styling. But this is to be envisioned in this price variety.I would advocate this wig to anybody on the lookout for a ‘change’ in model, then you can see irrespective of whether lengthy hair fits you.Great thank youprime purchase and amazon locker shipping and delivery definitely appreciatedorder yet again.I brought this wig to use everyday and wow i could not be happier. Every person instructed me how pleasant my hair looks and how did i get it so shiny. You can use a flat iron on it set to a really very low environment just to retain it wanting straight and to de frizz it. I do mine two times a working day when it is really been pretty windy otherwise it truly is just at night when i consider it off so it truly is prepared to go the following day. The colour is so natural looking with highlights running throughout. Overall the wig is manufactured really nicely and you get a wig cap with it. I extra clips to the underside of mine as i keep it on all day but you don’t require them. Great wig for a wonderful value.Good high quality quick services would undoubtedly recommend a++++.Really fast shipping (two doing the job times), well wrapped, arrived with hair internet, guidance and cap. Appears pretty a lot as in the photo, probably a little thicker. Scalp can breath and appears incredibly real looking, particularly soon after styling it myself. It does get tangled quite easily even though, but i am going to test a flat iron on it soon. I preferred to wear it as a joke, simply because my all-natural hair color is very dim, but nobody realised it was a wig and a number of persons questioned me for my hairdresser’s address. :-d lots of compliments and i sense definitely fairly. There are two issues to point out with this wig. To start with, the lighting on the photo helps make the wig show up alot paler than it in fact is so i was a minimal astonished to get the wig and it was a darker colour than initially assumed. Next, it is reduce in this sort of a way to slide forward. The costume i will need it for calls for it to be tied back again in a ponytail and however the sides of the wig do not go down far plenty of in front of my ears to cover my all-natural hair, so i may perhaps have to have to shave a little off my individual just by the ears to get it to function. The fringe is very long, but that is ordinary with these wigs so you can trim them to a length to go well with you if wanted. There are in fact two main colours listed here. The main ash blonde and pale/platinum highlights. The highlights are not refined but they do search wonderful. All that stated, when worn down it does drop quite properly and irrespective of me obtaining a greater head, does seem extremely organic. There is a great deal of precise hair on it and it does not experience flimsy at all.Looks good, a pleasant combine of blondes – it won’t appear like a wig. This wig is just amazing, certainly seems considerably much more pricey than it was, it was intended for the bed room and my partner loves it so significantly, i even wear it for do the job and my friends really like the search, this is the 2nd wig i’ve bought from forever young the other staying a limited bop, company and delivery is superb, really brief arriving, unquestionably invest in far more from them.I obtained it in a blind panic following failing to bleach my hair light plenty of for a cosplay i wasn’t certain on the size, the fashion or the thickness, but i was desperate. Luckily my anxieties that it’s possible i had just impulse-purchased a little something that would not match my wants at all, were quashed. The wig is thick and feels pretty much purely natural – a lot more so than my genuine hair, go figure. The highlights are a good deal more ashy and distinguished than they are in the photo, but due to the fact i just essential a organic-on the lookout blonde hair color, i can ignore that. It pained me to have to minimize it, as it was so pretty how it arrived. On the other hand, to any one pondering of chopping and styling this wig, have no dread. Just a small patience, as it is styled to fall as it is in the image i brushed and brushed it out regularly, needing a second pair of hands to support me maintain the wig in place as i tied it up and produced adjustments. Everyone with working experience chopping serious hair will locate this a breeze, given that the final results are quite a lot just the identical. I utilised soft pastels (artists’ chalk) to dye the ends for my cosplay, and it held astonishingly very well. I imagined that wigs, by default, would be tougher to adhere any supplemental color too, but it truly is like performing with authentic hair. Or at least the future greatest matter, that i know of.Introduced this for an alice in wonderland ballet regime, it was utilised for four performances and appeared awesome, it never moved irrespective of cartwheels and some energetic choreography. It was a wonderful uncover at a ridiculous value for the high-quality.Awesome good quality for the cost, loads of compliments, arrived pretty speedy. I returned just as i didn’t personally like it. I am a larper and this wig is only the greatest wig i could find for my charachter. If there was a entrance-lace, bang considerably less edition of it, i would invest in it. The hair look just finea minimal little bit tangly, but not that significantly to turn out to be a dilemma.Seems excellent, feels amazing, but tangles very uncomplicated. Cant complain much for the reason that on £20. Still much less expensive than blowdry at hairdressers.Outstanding high-quality, practical and it will come with hair web to help hold your hair in location beneath.SummaryReviewer Nathalie DuboisReview Date2018-09-14 14:11:28Reviewed Item Forever Young 3X-Long Light Ash Blonde Number 22TH613 Ladies Fashion WigRating 3.0 / 5  stars, based on  26  reviewsPrice£14.99last_img read more

How Big The Internet Of Things Could Become

first_imgbrian proffitt Tags:#Cisco#Internet of Things 75 billion. That’s the [email protected]$#! number of devices that Morgan Stanley has extrapolated from a Cisco report that details how many devices will be connected to the Internet of Things by 2020. That’s 9.4 devices for every one of the 8 billion people that’s expected to be around in seven years. To help put that into more perspective, back in Cisco also came out with the number of devices it thinks were connected to the Internet in 2012, a number Cisco’s Rob Soderbery placed at 8.7 billion. Most of the devices at the time, he acknowledged were the PCs, laptops, tablets and phones in the world. But other types of devices will soon dominate the collection of the Internet of Things, such as sensors and actuators. By the end of the decade, a nearly nine-fold increase in the volume of devices on the Internet of Things will mean a lot of infrastructure investment and market opportunities will available in this sector. And by “a lot,” I mean ginourmous. In an interview with Barron’s, Cisco CEO John Chambers figures that will translate to a $14-trillion industry.See also: Cisco Hearts Internet Of ThingsGranted, Cisco has a lot of reasons to be bullish about the prospect of the Internet of Things: with product offerings in the router and switch space and a recent keen interest on building intelligent routing and application platforms right inside those devices, Cisco stands to gain a lot of business if it can get itself out in front of this newfangled Internet of Things. It’s not just Cisco talking up the Internet of Things: late last week, Morgan Stanley published a big 29-page research note on the topic that sought to at once define the Internet of Things and also quantify its size, growth and potential to make money. In her blog, Cisco VP of Corporate Communications Karen Tillman actually put Cisco’s estimate at 50 billion devices by the end of the decade. Morgan Stanley took Cisco’s data and predicted an even higher 75 billion figure.“Cisco estimates that only 200 million things were connected in 2000. Extrapolating the same growth rate up until 2020, this could mean that 75 billion things could be connected by then,” Morgan Stanley’s report said.Morgan Stanley’s brief was bullish as a whole, though it did deliver expectations from other companies that weren’t quite so high as Cisco’s: “Intel (INTC) forecasts that the Internet of Things will represent a 3.8-billion device opportunity by 2015 (including mobile computing i.e., tablets, smartphones…) and ABI research forecasts that number will reach 30 billion by 2020.”See also: How The Internet Of Things Will ThinkWho wins if any of these scenarios takes place? Semiconductor, network, remote sensor and big data vendors will be the lottery winners of such Internet of Things growth, to name a very few. Big data especially: 75 billion devices all generating signals of data to be analyzed and measured, many of which in real- or near-realtime? That’s got big data written all over it.And the ceiling is nowhere near being approached. Right now, the Morgan Stanley note estimates that there are potentially 200 devices for each person in the world that could be connected to Internet of Things. Economics and consolidation will most likely keep us from ever seeing that many devices connected to the Internet of Things, but the room for growth is still massive in these early days.Image courtesy of Shutterstock. Cabrillo National Monument closed amid partial government shutdown

first_img SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – San Diego’s Cabrillo National Monument was closed Saturday as a result of the partial federal government shutdown that went into effect at midnight when the Senate and House of Representatives failed to reach an agreement on President Donald Trump’s proposed border wall. The monument’s website said it was shuttered Saturday “for the safety of visitors and park resources” due to the lapse in federal funds, and the site wouldn’t be updated during the shutdown. The Cleveland National Forest’s website also said the USDA wouldn’t actively update the site during the shutdown, but there was no information on any portion of the forest being closed. The status of many National Parks is unclear. Workers were to be furloughed, but the parks themselves were expected to remain accessible for the most part. Congress approved funds for about three-quarters of the federal government in September, but the budgets for the remaining portions of the government had a Dec. 21 deadline for funding to pass. The House of Representatives on Thursday passed a stopgap funding bill with $5 billion for a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. The Senate and House both adjourned Friday night without reaching a spending deal. The Senate again adjourned without a deal Saturday afternoon, ensuring the shutdown will continue at least through Thursday. Many workers were off during the Christmas holiday anyway, meaning the full effects of the shutdown won’t likely be felt unless it goes on longer. The departments of Interior, Homeland Security, State, Agriculture, Housing and Urban Development, Transportation, Commerce and Justice were all affected by the partial shutdown.Workers such as Border Patrol agents and Transportation Security Administration workers were expected to continue working. The U.S. Postal Service was unaffected by the shutdown and will continue to deliver mail.
