Sumner Fair Association announce winners of the Figure 8 race and Demolition Derby in Caldwell

first_imgSubmitted to Sumner Newscow — The Sumner County Fair Association sponsored Figure 8 points race was held on Friday, August 15 at the race arena on the west edge of Caldwell. Drivers participating in this event earn points for the race circuit run out of Newkirk, Oklahoma.Beginning the evening was the popular cruiser race.  In this event there are two drivers per can.  One driver is in control of steering and braking, and the other driver is responsible for accelerating.  This is a team event at its best!  Drivers in this event were Travis Jordan and Steve Eller; Derek Zulkoski and Thomas Langenwalter; Sonia Mosier and Michelle Swope; Brennan Hutton and Kellen Downing; Jonathan Morgan and Nathan Gonzalas; Kyle Wolfe and Brant Ward; Anton Reynolds and Travis York; Chris Hinman and Bretten Stacy; Justin Epperly and Jessica Butzback.  Completing the twenty laps first were Zulkoski and Langenwalter; second went to Jordan and Eller with third to Wolfe and Ward.  Finishing fourth was Morgan and Gonzalas, and fifth was Hutton and Downing.  Prizes for this race were $150, $100, $75, $50, and $25.Next came the feature race.  Running the ten laps in heat one were Darrell Clark, Lawrence Kablinger, John Rajl, Justin Epperly, and Andrew Piatt.  Clark and Rajl qualified for the finals.  Running in heat two were Jerrod Crittenden, Adam Andes, Travis Topper, Wolfe and Ward, and Hutton and Downing.  Qualifying for finals were Andes and Wolfe/Ward.  Heat three drivers were Scott York, Rick Kunkel, Ryan Floyd, Cody Kearns, and Jonathan Morgan.  Finalists were Kunkel and York.After a break all drivers not qualifying in the heats were able to run in a 15 lap consolation heat.  Participating in the consolation were Piatt, Kablinger, Crittenden, Topper, Hutton/Downing, Floyd, Kearns, and Morgan with Piatt, Kablinger, Floyd, and Morgan qualifying for finals. The final feature race consisted of 20 laps.  Competing for the $600, $400, $200, $100, and $50 prizes were Clark, Andes, Kunkel, Rajl, Wolfe/Ward, York, Kablinger, Piatt, and Morgan.  Champion of the race was Kyle Wolfe/Brandt Ward followed by Kunkel, Rajl, York, and Morgan.Following the feature race, a powder puff event was held.  The race consisted of 20 laps for prizes of $80, $50, $40, $30, and $20.  Driving in the race were Denise Crittenden, Cecelia Kunkel, Sonja Mosier, Matte Whicker/Amanda Spencer, Arian Hutton/Crystal Brome, and Rikki Cole.  Champion was Sonja Mosier followed by Kunkel, Whicker/Spencer, Hutton/Brome, and Cole.Then on Saturday, August 16, the 36th annual Demolition Derby was held.  Competing in heat one were Dean Woodson, Justin Kindy, Tiler Harris, and Blake Randels with Woodson and Randels qualifying for finals.  Competitors in heat two were Shane McLaughlin, Kevin Topper, Jacob Harris, and Nathan Ingram with McLaughlin and Harris qualifying for finals.  Driving in heat three were Barclay Wilt, Jim Tatum, Robert Wilson, and Robby Miller with Wilt and Tatum making it to finals.Heat four drivers were Todd Morgan, Rocky Hunt, Derek Zulkoski, Nathaniel Zulkoski, and Tyler Batchford.  Both Derek Zulkoski and Nathaniel Zulkoski qualified for finals.After a short break Kindy, Tiler Harris, Topper, Ingram, Wilson, Miller, Morgan, and Hunt competed in a consolation heat.  Qualifying for finals were Kindy, Tiler Harris, Wilson, and Morgan.    Competing in the final heat were Woodson, Randels, Mclaughlin, Jacor Harris, Wilt, Tatum,  Derek Zulkoski, Tiler Harris, Wilson, and Morgan.  Finishing first was McLaughlin; second went to Morgan.  Zulkoski and Wilt tied for third/fourth and split those prizes; Randels finished fifth.  Prizes were $800, $400, $200, $100, and $50.John Keiter was the race starter for both events.  Eric Reynolds announced both events, and Dennis Thurman was the videographer. Kelsey Creed sang the National Anthem on Friday night, and Kelsey and MaecyLynn Wolff sang on Saturday night.  The fair association would like to thank those individuals who were the counters and judges for the events, the Caldwell Fire Department for having a truck available, the Ambulance for being on hand, the Liquor Locker for providing ice, and all the other volunteers who worked at the gate, in the arena, or in the concession stand.  A big thank you goes out to Troy Strnad, Ken Whaley, and Jim Brown who provided equipment and drove it in the arena picking up cars and moving barriers.  The Fair Association thanks the patrons who attended these races and supported the fair’s fund raising events.Follow us on Twitter.
