Australia saves 25 stranded pilot whales, rescue efforts continue

first_imgRescuers had to get in the icy water to attach the whales, a species of oceanic dolphin that grow to 7 meters long and can weigh up to 3 tons, to slings and then guide the animals as boats dragged them out to deeper water.”We settled on a method where we get a sling placed under the whale, that’s attached to a boat (and) we also have crew in the water,” said Nic Deka, a regional manager of Tasmania’s Parks and Wildlife Service, at a news conference.More than 60 people are involved in the rescue effort, including local fishermen and volunteers. They wore wetsuits and were working in shifts to prevent hypothermia.Scientists do not know why whales, which travel together in pods, sometimes beach themselves but they are known to follow a leader, as well as gather around an injured or distressed whale. Rescuers set free around 25 whales on Tuesday that were marooned on a sandbar off the remote west coast of Tasmania in one of Australia’s worst beaching events, and hope to save more in coming days.Government scientists said about 90 of the 270-strong pod of pilot whales have died since they were spotted from the air in shallow water off the rugged coastline on Monday.Footage showed large numbers of the animals prone on a wide sandbar at Macquarie Harbor, about 200 kilometers northwest of the state capital Hobart, while others floundered in slightly deeper water. Topics :center_img Kris Carlyon, a wildlife biologist with the state government conservation agency, said rescuers would give a new estimate of how many whales had died on Wednesday, but expected to free the remaining animals at a higher rate.”We’re dealing with large, distressed animals, for several days at a time, and it does take an emotional toll sometimes,” Carlyon said. “This is a natural event so we can accept that we’re going to lose some animals. We’re focusing on having as many survivors as we can.”last_img read more

Flaherty is allowing 2.2 HR/9 and 47-percent hard-hit rate to lefties this season. Conforto has a .406 wOBA against LHP and is a prime HR candidate here. Dom Smith from the Mets is also hitting righties well and is in play. For more player recommendations and analysis, become a Fantasy Alarm subscriber today!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Pos PlayerMatchupOpp. SPDKFDY! Yarbrough (L)$4100$3500$24UPGRADE Today’s MLB DFS Picks: DraftKings, FanDuel advice for Thursday, June 13SP: Homer Bailey, Royals vs. Tigers. Bailey is risky, which isn’t a sercet I’m letting anyone in on. He can be hit by anybody, even the lowly Tigers offense. Bailey does have the benefit of pitching at home, which everyone can appreciate considering there have only been 60 home runs hit at Kauffman Stadium, the third fewest at any ballpark in the league. Bailey picked up a win against Detroit earlier in the year, allowing two earned over six innings. If we got that again out of him, chalk it up as a massive win. Oh, by the way, the Tigers rank 28th in wRC+ against righthanded hurlers this season, just for the record.C: Travis d’Arnaud, Rays vs. Angels. d’Arnaud has become the guy behind the plate for the Rays, and he’s taken advantage of it. He’s slashing .333/.385/.697 over his past 10 games with three home runs, three doubles and 11 RBIs. d’Arnaud has faced Skaggs three times and has taken him deep once.MORE THURSDAY MLB: SP rankings1B: Luke Voit, Yankees vs. White Sox. It’s very hard to ignore the fact that Ivan Nova has a 6.28 ERA, allows 1.63 HR/9, and allows hard contact 34.5 percent of the time. Righties have a .302 average, .840 OPS and .364 wOBA off of Nova. Voit has monster numbers vs. RHP himself, notching a .908 OPS, .249 ISO & 143 wRC+.2B: Eric Sogard, Blue Jays @ Orioles. He has to be mispriced on DK because nobody is paying $5.1K for him, but $3.2K on FD is very reasonable. He’s riding high right now, slashing .353/.343/.588 over his past 10 games, including two home runs and a stolen base.SS: Niko Goodrum, Tigers @ Royals. We’re unsure if he’s going to play, but it was only a bruised knee so how long will he be out? Goodrum has been rollin’ at the dish, batting .341 with a .996 OPS over his past 10 games. He’s cheap across the industry even in a meeting with Homer Bailey.3B: Manny Machado, Padres @ Rockies. Look, it’s been a down year. I get it. Maybe this is the perfect time for a Coors trip? Machado has been better away from San Diego this year, batting .271 with a .364 wOBA and has a meeting with Jon Gray who has struggled more against righties, allowing a .338 wOBA. Stacking SD could be a profitable approach tonight. CA. Avila (L)[email protected] 7:05E. Fedde (R)$3700$2400$8UPGRADE OFI. Desmond (R)[email protected] 8:40M.
