Judge rules Republican Tenney won last open US House race

first_imgALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A New York judge ruled Friday that Republican Claudia Tenney defeated U.S. Rep. Anthony Brindisi by 109 votes in the nation’s last undecided congressional race. The ruling by Judge Scott DelConte could clear the way for Tenney to be sworn in as the representative for central New York’s 22nd Congressional District, barring emergency intervention by a state appeals court. DelConte’s ruling came after he spent three months reviewing ballot challenges and trying to fix a myriad of problems with vote tabulation. He rejected an argument by Brindisi’s lawyers that certification of the election results be delayed until an appeals court had a chance to review the case.last_img read more

Social distancing in jeepneys difficult to carry out – Treñas

first_imgThe regional director also told Treñas allhealthcare workers boarding buses do not have to pay fare; they just have topresent their identification cards. The jeepney ban starts today. Social distancing, however, is very difficult to carry out in publicutility vehicles, specifically the passenger jeepneys, according to Mayor JerryTreñas. Still, tricycles and trisikads could only pass local roads, not national roads, stressed Treñas. Osmeña said TFRB is ready to dispatchmore buses, if the city government will request for augmentation./PN Treñas, however, clarified that jeepneysdelivering agricultural products to and from the city could ply the city’sstreets. Only the following public utilityvehicles are allowed to transport passengers because social distancing in themis possible: buses, taxis, tricycles and trisikads. For non-healthcare workers, a P10 fareis imposed. Osmeña, meanwhile, assured the citymayor the Board will permit 10 buses to serve passengers in the first few hourstoday. Because COVID-19 can spread fromperson to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are spreadwhen a person with COVID-19 coughs or exhales, social distancing is highlyrecommended by the Department of Health (DOH) and the World Health Organization(WHO). “Mabudlaymag-social distancing ang aton mga pumoluyo sa public utility jeepneys,” said Treñasyesterday. PHOTO BY IAN PAUL CORDERO/PN ILOILO City – Social distancing means increasing the physical space betweenpeople to avoid spreading illness such as the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The objective of social distancing is toreduce the probability of contact between persons carrying an infection, andothers who are not infected, so as to minimize disease transmission, morbidityand ultimately, mortality. Treñas said he consulted with LandTransportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) regional directorRichard Osmeña about the temporary jeepney ban. ‘GHOST TOWN’. The usually congested Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue in the bustling district of Mandurriao, Iloilo City is empty on the first day (March 20, 2020) of the nearly month-long lockdown imposed by the city government in a bid to keep the metro free from the coronavirus disease 2019. IAN PAUL CORDERO/PN He thus ordered a halt to the operation of passenger jeepneys whilethe city is on an enhanced community quarantine against COVID-19 until April14, unless extended or shortened.last_img read more

Zabaleta excited by Pellegrini

first_img Press Association Pablo Zabaleta believes Manuel Pellegrini could be a great manager for Manchester City. The City defender has long known of Pellegrini’s reputation having been a junior at Argentinian club San Lorenzo when the Chilean was first-team boss. Pellegrini is widely expected to be named as replacement for the sacked Roberto Mancini at the Etihad Stadium after it was confirmed he is to leave Malaga at the end of the Spanish season. Zabaleta, 28, speaking in New York on City’s post-season tour, said: “I have never worked under Pellegrini before, when he was at San Lorenzo I was in the second team. I don’t know him as a person but he did well at Real Madrid, Villarreal and Malaga. We will see if Pellegrini signs for Manchester City. His way to play football is great.” center_img Zabaleta added: “Somebody told me he is a great manager so we will wait to see what happens. Hopefully if he comes to City he can just carry on with his football.” Pellegrini potentially moved a step closer to City when Malaga announced he would leave La Rosaleda after their final two Primera Division games. The 59-year-old did have two years remaining on his contract but he and the club both cited “sporting reasons” for his departure. Pellegrini added: “Everyone has the right and obligation to follow their chosen path, and Malaga must do the same. “The club requires a realistic project next season. Malaga had a past without Manuel Pellegrini, and will also have a future without Manuel Pellegrini.” Pellegrini oversaw unprecedented success at Villarreal by guiding them to a Champions League semi-final in 2006 and second place in La Liga in 2008. He then had a single season in charge at Real Madrid before taking over at Malaga, whom he steered to the last eight of the Champions League this year. last_img read more

Beat writers expect Orange to fall short at No. 13 North Carolina

first_imgPhil D’Abbraccio (16-4): North Carolina 72, Syracuse 65Heels over headsThe downward slide continues. Syracuse is rebounding well, but the physicality of North Carolina’s big men means the thin SU rotation will really be tested in how it handles foul trouble. Competing with the Atlantic Coast Conference’s top rebounding team will be a challenge in itself, and keeping the Orange’s vital players on the floor and not on the bench will be even more difficult. And we saw how Syracuse shot free throws with a home-crowd advantage on Saturday. Shooting from the line in a raucous Dean E. Smith Center environment — plus being drained, physically — doesn’t bode much better for SU.Jesse Dougherty (16-4): North Carolina 71, Syracuse 62Home sickSyracuse may have fallen to Miami on Saturday, but there’s no doubting that the 30,000-plus Carrier Dome crowd had something to do with the Orange keeping it close. Now SU travels to Chapel Hill, North Carolina where Roy Williams’ Tar Heels have lost just twice this season — once in conference play to then-No. 13 Notre Dame — and it promises to be one of the hardest tests of Syracuse’s season. The Orange was sluggish in road conference wins over Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech in early January, and playing No. 13 North Carolina in the Dean E. Smith Center is a whole different beast. Beasts haven’t been too kind to short-handed SU this season, and expect that trend to continue.Jacob Klinger (17-3): North Carolina 75, Syracuse 63Oh, Tar-tar sauceThis is Syracuse’s best chance to knock off one of the ACC’s elite teams. The Tar Heels don’t shoot especially well, which is the easiest way to beat the zone. But they do get to the basket like nobody’s business. The Orange struggled to keep Miami out of the lane on Saturday and keeping the top of the defense tight has been a patchy area for SU all season. Marcus Paige doesn’t make it any easier. More importantly, this exposes Rakeem Christmas to foul trouble and Chinonso Obokoh to having to play. A team that’s dependent on big men for scoring shouldn’t be able to win with a center whose primary offensive responsibility is setting screens. Not against North Carolina at North Carolina, anyway. Robert Griffin III: Ravens’ new offense will shock people in 2019

first_imgDespite going from mentor to backup as second-year quarterback Lamar Jackson took the reins for the Ravens, Robert Griffin is just excited to still be playing football. While the veteran admitted he isn’t quite where he wants to be in his career, Griffin is fine biding his time in Baltimore while he awaits his next opportunity. Saints’ David Onyemata gets 1-game suspension, report says Given the Ravens have reconfigured their offense this offseason, Griffin has put in the extra work to ensure he’ll be ready to contribute to a scheme he believes will impress in 2019 if called upon. Tyreek Hill’s meeting with NFL was ‘positive’; Chiefs left hopeful, report says “I’m happy to be here, I’m excited to be here, I love this place, I love this organization,” Griffin said Friday, via the team’s official website. “They’ve treated me well. I have bigger goals in mind, and those goals start with the Baltimore Ravens. So I have to make sure I do everything I can to be the best for the Baltimore Ravens.”My ultimate goal is to become a franchise quarterback. At 29, I believe that’s still attainable. But that’s going to come from the work, making the most of all opportunities. I feel like I’m a better quarterback than I’ve ever been. If called upon, I can’t wait to showcase it.” Related News Steelers’ Ryan Shazier eyeing return: ‘I still want to make the Hall of Fame’ “I’ve got to make sure I understand the offense, forward and backward,” Griffin said. “The offense will look different. I think we’ll shock some people with what we’re going to do. If we need to run it 60 times, we can do it. But if we need to throw it 30 to 40 times, we can also do it. I think that’s what we’re working on, to make sure we have those capabilities.”Griffin spent three seasons with the Redskins after being drafted second overall in 2012, but lost the starting job to Kirk Cousins after suffering numerous injuries. He ended up playing with the Browns for a season and eventually landed with the Ravens after sitting out the 2017 season. He went 2-of-6 for 21 yards for Baltimore last season.last_img read more

Wellington City Council to discuss code enforcement; replaces oil pump at turbine

first_imgby James Jordan, Sumner Newscow — Early next week will be busy for the Wellington City Council with meetings set for Monday and Tuesday. On Monday there is a work session set to start at 5:30 p.m. at the council chambers. A representative will be there to discuss that city’s involvement with code enforcement that Wellington is considering. In a previous version of the story, it stated CDBG grant will also be discussed. This is not correct. That will be discussed at a later time, according to Stacy Davis, Sumner County Economic Development Commission Director. They will also be talking about code enforcement and want to get public input in this area. They may tweak the system some. That will be at a later date.On Tuesday of next week Mayor Shelley Hansel will host her monthly town hall meeting from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at city hall. Streets director Jeremy Jones will be there to talk about the recycling program, and the public can raise other issues as well. She said no more than one or two city council members would be there in light of the recent state attorney general’s ruling that they had violated an open meetings act rule in a previous town hall meeting where several members showed up and talked about city business. In other matters:•The city approved a resolution to buy an oil pump from Pro Energy of Sedalia, Mo. at a cost of $24,000. City Manager Roy Eckert said they requested bids from three companies and got only two back. It was not in the 2016 budget, but there are reserve funds available, he said. The pump is leaking oil, city officials said, and that could put the gas turbine at the electric plant in danger, and that could cost a tremendous amount if that were damaged. The pump is 30 years old and parts are not available to repair the one that is leaking, so they are getting a new one.Eckert said in the past the city has deferred maintenance on several things to save money. Letting things go like that is going to catch up with the city eventually.“Now it is happening more. It is coming home to roost,” he said.•The council also approved a three-year agreement with Davis Tree Service of Arkansas City for up to $90,000 over three years at $93 per hour. They trim trees from electrical lines which is dangerous work. Eckert said they only got one bid back, and a company they previously dealt with did not bid this time.Councilman Bill Butts expressed concern about the company and wondered if there had been any complaints. He said they had done work for him in the past that was not very good.“I would rather have hired some beavers,” he said. They all still voted for approving the measure since there were no other bids.•Mayor Shelley Hansel said the organization, Public Square Communities, will hold a meeting at the United Way office, 314 W. Washington, at 6 p.m. Thursday. The meeting has to do with community services.•A legislative coffee will be held at 10 a..m. Saturday, March 12 at the donut shop in Wellington.•The council also appointed Kelly Green to the Alcohol and Drug Committee.•Lois Hutchison was approved to the Housing Authority Board. This is a member voted on by Wheatland residents, and the city approved their choice.•The council also held a 30 minute executive session for business and trade secrets, which is one of the three reasons they can have them. There was no statement or decision after the session.Follow us on Twitter. Close Forgot password? Please put in your email: Send me my password! You can only kick the can for so long, and I’m afraid that Wellington is already on borrowed time for so many maintenance projects. This isn’t a problem unique to Wellington, but it’s also not going to fix itself. Report Reply 0 replies · active 232 weeks ago Post a new comment Enter text right here! In this post, we will delve into the science surrounding the ketogenic diet for weight loss. What does the science say? Low-fat diets are commonly recommended for weight loss, but recent randomized controlled trials have compared the ketogenic and low-fat diet’s effectiveness in weight loss. Thus far, studies have shown that low carbohydrate diets induce greater short-term weight loss than a balanced diet, but the diets are equally successful long-term:“In this meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials comparing the effects of low-carbohydrate vs low-fat diets, low-carbohydrate diets were more effective in inducing weight loss after 6 months, but this effect was no longer obvious after 12 months of follow-up”2“Our results show that the weight loss in overweight and obese subjects with or without diabetes on isoenergetic low CHO or balanced weight loss diets was similar at 3–6 months and at 1–2 years”3We do not yet know the effectiveness of a ketogenic diet, nor have we identified the mechanism behind the weight loss it can cause. Traditional weight-loss diets work on the principle of consuming fewer calories than a person burns during everyday living and exercise. Possibilities for weight loss on the keto diet include:Increased satiety due to protein consumption1Reduction in lipogenesis (the synthesis of fat in the body) and increased lipolysis (the breakdown of fat in the body)1Increased metabolic efficiency due to higher fat consumption1Increased energy expended in gluconeogenesis (the synthesis of glucose, a type of sugar, in the body)1It is important to be mindful that ketogenic diets are difficult to stay on for long and many nutrient-dense foods are rich in carbohydrates, such as fruits, vegetables, dairy products, whole grains (oats, rice, wheat), and legumes. Also, the long-term health impacts of a ketogenic diet remain unknown as many studies have a 6-month to a year duration. Finally, a high-fat diet can have negative health impacts including increased total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol.2 Due to insufficient supporting evidence for the ketogenic diet, a balanced diet and exercise plan is still the recommended route towards weight loss for the general population.4To learn more about the Ketogenic diet please tune in to our free webinar The Ketogenic Diet-Is it Another Fad?  February 26, 2019 at 11:00 am ET.
