(Image: Goal4Africa)Janine ErasmusTwo teams, comprising the world’s best soccer players, will square up against each other for charity on 12 July 2008 at the Allianz Arena in Munich. This game, the first of a number of such events planned around the world, will see the Goal4Africa programme kick off in style, and at the same time will pay tribute to former South African president Nelson Mandela, who turns 90 in July.Established in 2008, Goal4Africa is a charity whose vision is to use the “beautiful game” (a phrase first attributed to Brazilian soccer star Didi) to raise funds for sports development and education in Africa in the run-up to the 2010 Fifa World Cup. The organisation’s long-term goal is to make sustainable contributions to peace- and nation-building, social and economic development, and poverty alleviation across the continent.Mandela himself has stated that his dream is to provide better schooling for African children, as education is the most powerful tool for changing the world and fighting poverty. Now, Goal4Africa brings together education and football, with the aim of building on Mandela’s vision. The organisation, which hopes to raise $90-million, is driven by a group of experienced sports and marketing professionals. Goal4Africa creator Chris Vermeeren, a former professional tennis player from the Netherlands, is backed by more than 15 years of international sports marketing experience. His colleague, South African event management specialist Nico du Plessis, can boast of working on events such as the Rugby World Cup, the ICC Cricket World Cup, and the 2010 Fifa World Cup.The other two partners in the initiative, American Ken Simmonds and Dutchman Ivo Roefs, are experts in project conceptualisation and management, and brand building respectively.Football fans are in for an impressive match with the likes of Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard, Ronaldo and Kaká of AC Milan, Samuel Eto’o of Barcelona, Ruud van Nistelrooy of Real Madrid, Didier Drogba and Michael Ballack of Chelsea, as well as South Africa’s Benni McCarthy of Blackburn, and Sean Bartlett and Kaizer Motaung Jr of Kaizer Chiefs all on the field at the same time.Football star Clarence Seedorf of AC Milan, who will also participate, is Goal4Africa’s first and global ambassador. In addition to the game, fans can look forward to a live entertainment event during which Goal4Africa’s mission will be officially announced, Nelson Mandela’s life story will be retold, and the special Goal4Africa anthem will make its debut. The song features the vocals of British singer Ali Campbell of UB40 and South Africa’s Grammy Award-winning Ladysmith Black Mambazo.“It’s an honour for me to sing with Ladysmith Black Mambazo,” said Campbell. “To do so at an event that celebrates Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday makes this even more special.”The event is scheduled for broadcasting to 41 countries around the world.Scoring for charityFunds will be raised from each goal scored. Sponsors – whether companies, organisations, groups of friends, or individuals – can set a number of conditions for their donations. Examples are a goal scored by their favourite team or player, or any goal scored at amateur level, or a certain amount to match a certain number of goals scored in a season.Fans from all over the world can also participate over the internet through an interactive goal kicking game, and a smaller version is also planned for mobile phones. As with the live version, supporters will make a donation for every goal scored in the digital games. All that is required is to register on www.goal4africa.org.Funds raised will be managed and disbursed by a steering committee working with the United Nations. The steering committee comprises the Nelson Mandela Foundation; the Peace and Sport organisation under the patronage of Prince Albert II of Monaco; PricewaterhouseCoopers; Edu Jansing, CEO of the Netherlands-based More than Football Foundation; and Champions for Children, an organisation dedicated to improving early childhood education.Goal4Africa is partnered by organisations such as the Nelson Mandela Foundation; the United Nations; Peace and Sport; and German football club Bayern Munich, which is donating the use of its home stadium, the Allianz Arena, for the high-profile event.“The football match of the Goal4Africa world team will be an unforgettable and unique celebration for Mr Mandela’s 90th birthday,” said Mandela Foundation CEO Achmat Dangor. “We are very committed to Goal4Africa as it builds further on Nelson Mandela’s vision: create better education for the children to build a lasting legacy for the future of Africa.”Do you have queries or comments about this article? Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest With continued dry weather, the pest we’ve been getting the most calls about is the spider mite. This is just a reminder that vigilant scouting for this pest is a good idea right now.It is also important to re-scout five days after treatment because many products will not kill the eggs, and populations can resurge. Any necessary follow-up treatment should be made with a product with a different mode of action to reduce resistance development. So, for example, if you used something with bifenthrin the first time, you might switch to Lorsban the second time, or vice versa. There are two miticides that are newly labeled for spider mite management in soybean and/or some types of corn: Agri-Mek from Sygenta and Zeal from Valent. We at OSU have not tested these products yet, but are currently running trials with both of them in northwestern Ohio.Economic thresholds based on the number of mites per plant have not been established for spider mites on soybeans. However, a scheme for evaluating an infested field based on observations of the presence of mite and feeding injury has been developed. In making an assessment of a spider mite infested field, it is important that one recognize the early signs of mite feeding, which is the stippling or speckled effect that initially appears on the foliage when foliage is still green. In addition, it is essential that one use a good hand lens to view relative abundance of mites in egg, nymph, and adult stages. The following is a system that can be used to assess a field and determine the need for taking action.Mites are barely detected on underside of leaves in dry locations or on edges of fields. Injury is barely detected. Non-economic population; do nothing.Easily detected on underside of leaves along edges of fields or perhaps on leaves in dry areas throughout field. Most foliage is still green, but yellow stippling caused by mite feeding is becoming detectable on upper side of leaves with the underside showing mite feeding. Still non-economic; warrants close monitoring. Many plants are infested when examined closely, with plants showing varying degrees of stippling. Possibly some speckling and discoloration of some of the leaves. These plants may be limited to field edges, but also might be found throughout field. Field edges might be showing signs of injury. Economic population developing; rescue treatment warranted. Consider entire field spray if mites are common throughout field. All plants in area, whether along field edge or within field, are heavily infested. Plants are discolored with wilted leaves, usually obvious from a distance. Severe injury occurring. Economic population; rescue treatment will save field.

Today at the Cloudforce event in New York City CEO Marc Benioff revealed more about the new version. Most importantly, ServiceCloud is transforming into a unified communications system for customer support by integrating VOIP and video conferencing technologies – including Apple’s FaceTime. Benioff didn’t specify, but it’s possible some of the new features were built using technology from Salesforce.com ‘s acquisition of DimDim earlier this year. 3 Areas of Your Business that Need Tech Now Related Posts How will the ability to contact customer support via FaceTime change the behavior of both the customer and the agent? Face to face video customer support could be a game changer.R “Ray” Wang, the principal analyst and CEO of Constellation Research, says connecting the contact center to mobile devices can open many new use cases for companies. For example, insurance customers could file claims live and on the spot using camera phones.IT failure expert Michael Krigsman of Asuret reminds us not to get too carried away. “These innovations will require process changes for service providers, which will take time,” he says. “We saw the future, but reality will take time to catch up.”“Whether it’s for customer or employee communication, I’ve written before that voice, video, conferencing and virtual meetings are front and center to how organizations look at collaboration,” says Sameer Patel of the Sovos Group. He notes that these areas are often ignored by enterprise collaboration startups because it’s difficult and expensive to offer these sorts of services. “But if we can’t coherently unify these traditional modes of communication with newer social and collaborative constructs, you cannot effectively serve the customer on her terms,” Patel says. “Whilst she might prefer to engage on Facebook, she most certainly wants to know that she can talk to a human at the speed of a click.”In addition to its traditional large competitors – Oracle, Microsoft and SAP – Salesforce.com is increasingly in competition with Cisco. Cisco is branching into the social media monitoring field with SocialMiner, and it is also building what can be considered a next-generation contact center, Finesse. Both companies are now pushing video. Salesforce.com may be branching into Web conferencing with its DimDim acquisition, which would bring it into competition with Cisco’s WebEx. Meanwhile, both companies have social collaboration tools in the form of Salesforce.com Chatter and Cisco Quad. However, Salesforce.com is also working with Cisco by integrating Cisco VOIP into ServiceCloud. And of course, all of this push for mobile video brushes up against the ongoing mobile bandwidth problem we wrote about yesterday. Also of note, ServiceCloud is upping its social media monitoring and analytics features with Salesforce.com for Facebook, Salesforce.com for Twitter and Radian6 for Salesforce.com.Benioff promised that Force.com, Salesforce.com’s development platform, will support more languages in the future. Force.com currently supports Java, Ruby (via its Heroku acquisition) and its own Apex language. “At the end of the day middleware does matter,” says Wang. He says Force.com is the linchpin of Salesforce.com’s success. Massive Non-Desk Workforce is an Opportunity fo… IT + Project Management: A Love Affair klint finley
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday said “one nation, one election is a good idea but not implementable now.” Earlier too, Mr. Kumar had expressed similar view on the issue.“Holding simultaneous elections to all State Assemblies and the Lok Sabha would not be possible with the coming general elections … it is is a good idea but now it is not implementable,” Mr. Kumar told presspersons. In the past, he had advocated for the simultaneous elections claiming that it would reduce the “expenditure and machinery” involved in conducting separate polls. “But, if you ask me it should be implemented from the next Lok Sabha election, I think, it is not possible,” he had said. Mr. Kumar’s party Janata Dal(U) is a ruling ally of the BJP in Bihar. Earlier, while speaking at a function for giving monetary benefits to SC/ST and EBC students preparing for competitive examinations, Mr. Kumar said, “money will be transferred directly into accounts of the eligible candidates and the entire amount will be paid in a single instalment.” Under the scheme, those who qualify in the Bihar Public Services Commission (Preliminary) exam would be given ₹50,000, while for clearing the preliminary test of the Union Public Service Commission ₹1 lakh would be given, he said. This facility to the students would be granted under the Mukhyamantri Anusuchit Jati Evam Janjati Chhatravas Yojana Scheme, which was approved by the State Cabinet few months ago.
