Mayday Mayday The Ambani Private Flight that Cried Wolf and Caused Mayhem

first_imgThe Rs 242-crore aircraft gifted by Mukesh Ambani to his wife Nita in 2007 repeated distress calls when it was not even air-borne. (not pictured)ReutersMukesh Ambani’s private Airbus 319 has reportedly caused him some embarrassment after distress calls were made from it while it was not even airborne. On the night of 10 November, around 8.32 PM, the Mumbai Air Traffic Control’s main tower received a Mayday alert, which is an internationally recognised signal for distress alert, especially during life-threatening situations, Mumbai Mirror reported. The distress call said that the engine of the flight, which was on a Delhi-Lahore-Muscat route, was on fire and that the aircraft was in rapid descent.By the time the ATC officials identified the aircraft as that of Mukesh Ambani, the second Mayday signal was sent, around 8.38 pm. This distress call repeated that the engine was on fire and that the airbus was falling into the sea.”We contacted the air traffic controls of Delhi and Muscat if they reported an emergency. We also checked with planes flying in that zone if they could see any aircraft with its engine on fire,” a senior ATC official said.Once the ATC officials of both Delhi and Muscat confirmed that all operations were normal, and that no nearby planes had reported any unusual sightings, Mumbai ATC shifted its focus to locating the radio frequency of the distress signals.Imagine their surprise when the source of the call was located nowhere in the sky – or plummeting downwards as the calls claimed – but southwest of the Mumbai airport, where the hangars for the private jets are located. However, the Airbus, which is one of the biggest private jets in the country, was found to be empty.”We sent a team to verify the aircraft parked there,” said the official. Once it was confirmed that the distress calls were made from the aircraft parked at the hangar, the ATC team reported the incident to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. The matter is under investigation since Tuesday and a report will be submitted by next week.”Initial investigations show the pilot was probably checking whether the emergency systems and the radio were functioning. But he forgot to inform the ATC that he was conducting these tests,” a senior DGCA official, close to the investigation, said. While Reliance spokesman Tushar Pania also confirmed the same, he maintained that all the relevant authorities were informed. “It was a regular mock drill to test the emergency systems and the ATC and the DGCA were informed,” he said. The Rs 242-crore aircraft had been a gift from Mukesh Ambani to his wife Nita for her 44th birthday in 2007 and is maintained by Jet Airways with the assistance of in-house Reliance engineers. The jet is custom-fitted with an office, a master bedroom, a bathroom with a range of showers, a bar with mood lighting, and a cabin with game consoles, music systems, satellite television and wireless communication.last_img read more

Snapped deal Softbank to spend 2 billion on taking stake in Flipkart

first_imgFlipkartReutersSnapdeal’s shareholder Softbank Group still plans to invest in Flipkart despite a failed merger between giant online retailer Flipkart and smaller rival Snapdeal — which could give the Japanese investor an opportunity to hold a significant stake in Flipkart.Softbank plans to invest about $2 billion through Vision Fund, according to a Reuters report.Flipkart, the only potential rival to US online retailer Amazon in India, was almost on the verge of acquiring its small competitor Snapdeal, but the merger was called off on Monday. That happened right after Snapdeal sold its digital platform Freecharge to Axis Bank. Also, with the money received from selling Freecharge, Snapdeal decided to cut jobs heavily, laying off at least 80 percent of the workforce.Over and above, Softbank could invest almost up to $2 billion in Flipkart, Bloomberg reported.Softbank, being a reputed startup investor, has invested in big Indian startups like Grofers and Ola before. Why did the merger fail?Flipkart and Snapdeal were in merger talks for a few months now. Snapdeal founders Kunal Bahl and Rohit Bansal and company employees took hefty pay cuts as the company’s condition worsened as a result of failed strategies and strong competition from Amazon and Flipkart. Against this poor performance, its biggest home competitor Flipkart stepped in to buy Snapdeal.Initially, Flipkart revised its bid for Snapdeal at $850 million, but the offer was rejected as Snapdeal demanded around $900 million. However, after multiple rounds of meetings and negotiations between both retailers, the merger collapsed. This development came right after Snapdeal sold Freecharge to Axis Bank. Armed with the Rs 385 crore which it received from Axis Bank, Snapdeal plans to revive its business strategies and models without having to shake hands with challenger Flipkart.Future at startups, a risky affairAs Snapdeal, — following the company declining the Flipkart offer –, has decided to lay off about 1,000 employees, it not only adds to the fears of those employees, but also sends out red flags to the ones who may be looking out for a career with other startups or already working for them. Such mass layoffs by startups and other tech firms also add up to the very poor unemployment picture staring India in the face.  Nevertheless, despite decisions like mass layoffs and rejecting Flipkart’s offer, it will be interesting to see if Snapdeal can make a comeback and build on the the name it made for itself early on.last_img read more

Easley/APPresident Donald Trump speaks to a crowd at Eastern Kentucky University, Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018, in Richmond, Ky.President Donald Trump will hold a rally at Houston’s NRG Arena next Monday, October 22, the first day of early voting in Texas. In addition to Trump, the rally will also feature Senator Ted Cruz and local Republican candidates.“People like Ted Cruz and many other Republicans need people who are Trump supporters but perhaps not die-hard Republicans to turn out and vote, and Donald Trump’s presence here in Houston will help drive them to the polls,” says Mark Jones, who teaches political science at Rice University. Cruz is locked in a tight reelection contest against Democratic Congressman Beto O’Rourke. But Trump’s visit may prove a double-edged sword, according to University of Houston political scientist Elizabeth Simas.“It may energize and mobilize Republicans and conservatives,” Simas says, “but it could also have a counter-mobilizing effect among Democrats and liberals as well.” That could wind up hurting Republican candidates in close races. Department set to launch statewide drive to check fitness of public transport

first_imgKolkata: Following the direction of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the state Transport department is going to start a state-wide drive to check the fitness of public transport vehicles.According to a senior official of the state Transport department, checking of goods vehicles is carried out round-the-year.”Now, we are going to initiate a process to carry out periodical fitness checking of public transport vehicles,” the official said, adding that initially emphasis will be given on checking fitness of buses and mini-buses that ply on different routes. It has been stated that there are two reasons behind starting fitness check of public transport vehicles. First of all, it will help in reducing the number of road accidents and will also ensure that commuters get better service, particularly as the bus fares have recently gone up. It may be mentioned that the Chief Minister has called for necessary steps to ensure periodical fitness checking of vehicles to avoid accidents. Also Read – Rain batters Kolkata, cripples normal lifeSince stress will be initially given on checking the fitness of buses, the official said that they will be checking whether a passenger is facing any problem while travelling in the vehicles. Citing some examples, the official added that they will be checking the condition of tyres being used in the public transport vehicles. It may be mentioned that use of good quality tyres in buses is mandatory to check accidents. According to experts, the chances of skidding goes up when sudden brake is applied if the condition of tyre is poor or if the vehicle is fitted with rethreaded tyres. Mainly in monsoon, many accidents take place due to the use of rethreaded tyres, as vehicles do not stop despite applying brakes. Also Read – Speeding Jaguar crashes into Mercedes car in Kolkata, 2 pedestrians killedBesides checking the quality of tyres, the officials will also check the overall condition of a bus to find out whether water drips from its ceiling and causes inconvenience to passengers. They will also check the condition of seats.”The checking will be carried out at different points and it will be done following the pick and choose method. Necessary steps will be taken if they find that the vehicles are not maintained properly,” the official said, adding that their endeavour is to ensure better amenities for passengers. The bus owners, in whose vehicles any fault is found, will be directed to repair the same, before plying them again. This comes at the time when the state government has taken up the state-wide Safe Drive Save Life campaign to bring down the rate of accidents.last_img read more

Cyber Alert

first_img Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right. E-Tailers beware: Internet fraud is alive and well in cyberspace. According to a November 2004 survey about online payment fraud conducted by CyberSource, a Mountain View, California, provider of electronic payment and fraud-prevention solutions, U.S. merchants expected to lose an estimated $2.6 billion to online fraud in 2004, $700 million more than in 2003.Hardest hit, according to the survey, are midsize companies–those with annual online revenues between $500,000 and $5 million. This group said it expected to lose up to 2.5 percent of online sales to fraud, compared to 1.9 percent in 2003. The reason for this increase is twofold, according to Bruce Cundiff, an analyst at Jupitermedia Corp. “One is the increasing organization among the fraudster community that allows for more efficient fraud perpetration,” he says. “In addition, larger businesses tend to be among the first to implement more stringent security measures. Fraudsters will always choose the path of least resistance.” Smaller businesses without sufficient fraud protection mechanisms in place risk being exploited. Fighting BackYou can fight back against payment fraud using a basic fraud-detection service, such as an address verification system, which matches street numbers on a customer’s billing address with the address on file with the credit card company. A mismatch may indicate that the person making the transaction is not authorized to use the card.Another prevention method uses credit card verification codes–the four digits printed on the front of an American Express card or the three digits on the back of a Visa or MasterCard. Buyers enter this code when making purchases, so in theory, buyers need more than just the card number to buy online; they need the actual card to read the code.Access to these verification services is offered by gateway or payment service providers such as CyberSourceand VeriSign. Each costs between $20 to $60 per month, plus setup fees.Utility Safeguard LLC, a Southampton, Pennsylvania, company that sells construction supplies to industrial companies, distributors and consumers online, has found these solutions to be very effective. Last year, the company had sales of $1.5 million and is on target to reach $3 million in sales this year. Utility Safeguard uses a fraud-detection service called Payflow Pro from VeriSign. The service is integrated into its NetSuite e-commerce software platform. With this solution, a new customer cannot check out until he or she has entered all the proper credit card information and the card has been cleared. “I have not had one bad credit card transaction since I began using the system in 2002,” says founder Jim Graham, 43, who implemented the system. Many experts, however, say that address and card verification systems are only a first step. Merchants selling valuable products that are easily resold, such as electronics, should also invest in the advanced fraud protection services offered by gateway providers. These services generally use fraud filters to screen for suspicious activity in real time. They cost an additional $30 to $1,500 per month, depending on the level of customization, along with additional setup and transaction fees.Another logical way to protect your business is to make sure the freight carrier obtains a signature before delivering the product. Graham also insists international customers prepay through wire transfer. Says Graham, “We do not take foreign credit cards because if there is a problem [overseas], it’s hard to get your money back.” Smart DesignBefore implementing fraud-protection services, however, web merchants should design websites that are more fraud-resistant, says Vic Dolcourt, senior product manager for risk products at CyberSource. He recommends designing the checkout process so that after a consumer presses the “buy” button, the “back” button on the web browser no longer responds. Also, thank the customer for the order without indicating whether the card has been accepted. Says Dolcourt, “This way, the site doesn’t serve as a tester for fraudulent account numbers.”Whatever you do, take action before a problem arises. “Speak to your payment processors. Have them train you in the basics of online fraud,” says Dolcourt. Also, get involved with industry groups such as the Merchant Risk Council, a group of merchants, vendors, financial institutions and law-enforcement agencies that follows trends in fraud. While implementing good fraud practices won’t eliminate fraud entirely, it will surely lessen the problem.Melissa Campanelli is a marketing and technology writer in New York City.
